INSURRECTION

Law enforcement officers point their guns at a door that was vandalized in the House chamber after the Capitol was breached. J. Scott Applewhite/AP January 6, 2021

I watched in utter disbelief as a the insurrection unfolded in the U.S. Capitol building on January 6. The violent mob entered the building and left unscathed as they threatened our elected officials and democracy itself. Heads need to roll.

The next morning I was struck by how I had the same feeling of dread the morning after the winner for the 2016 presidency was announced. It is surreal. I suspected we had not gain an ethical, empathetic or good leader.

Now we know. Our current president did take responsibility for and care  for citizens during the pandemic, there has not been an acknowledgement of the lives lost and the daily toll it has taken on the nation. I mourn the losses. There has failure to support taxpayers who loss jobs and businesses. The lines at the food banks bring me to tears. There are, Lies, lies, lies, more lies about the 2020 election that divide our nation in a way I did not think was possible. The bullying of other leaders to do his bidding, Emoluments Clause violations, blatant racism against African Americans, Muslims and immigrants, and attacks on BLM and black athletes. The list goes on.

However, inciting a disturbed mob to attack our elected leaders to stop the electoral vote count was unthinkable . Why would someone be so desperate to win a second term when they are not doing the job in the current term?

Our minds can mislead us. The mob fed themselves conspiracy theories and lies. The rally confirmed their bias for taking action on the lies and conspiracies. Be careful what you read, hear, and view on television, internet and other media. The chatter in your head and the folks you listen to can easily distort reality.

The way we heal this country is to quiet the rhetoric and  make our elected officials who promote alternate realities accountable for their actions.

Let’s not get distracted by the atrocities we witnessed. 2021 will be what we make it. More importantly, the way we heal ourselves is to consciously challenge our negative, biased thoughts and replace them with thoughts of hope, love, joy, laughter, encouragement, peace and happiness. Yes, in the middle of a negative thought and unfounded speculations change it mid-thought to the outcome that leads to hope, love, joy, laughter, encouragement, peace and happiness. How does that feel?
